National Sports Museum, Two Directions

2020

Advertising storyboard, two proposals, commissioned

In 2020 Subin Yu (유수빈) boarded two alternative directions, A안 and B안, for a National Sports Museum promotional video. The project was cancelled before production, so these frames are the only record of it.

A안 and B안, beat for beat

B (Play)

  1. A toddler sits on a floor beside a football, laughing.
B1. First contact with a ball.
  2. Close-up of a laughing child clutching a football.
    B2. Close on the laugh.
  3. A child asleep on a bed with an arm over a football.
B3. Asleep on the ball. A held beat.
  4. A father runs beside a child learning to ride a bicycle.
    B4. The bike lesson.
  5. A man kicks a football in an empty stadium.
B5. The father on the pitch.
  6. A man and two children hold up baseball bats and cheer.
    B7. Bats up.
  7. Three faces behind an open book: an amazed girl, a smiling man and a laughing boy.
    B8. Three ages, one book.

A (Memory)

  1. A small child sits on the floor next to a football.
    A1. The same first contact.
  2. A polaroid photograph of a smiling child.
    A2. A polaroid instead of a scene.
  3. A father helps a child on a bicycle.
    A3. The bike lesson, wider.
  4. A polaroid of a girl in a helmet, laughing.
    A4. The helmet polaroid.
  5. A young man kicks a football in a stadium.
A5. The father as a player.
  6. A man and two children with baseball bats raised.
    A7. Bats up.
  7. A boy kisses a trophy while two adults smile behind a polaroid.
    A8. The trophy.

Both directions converge here

  1. A one-point-perspective museum corridor lined with exhibits and photographs.
    9. The museum corridor.
  2. A father holding a child, with another child beside him, facing the camera.
    10. The family frame.

The client wanted a father and his two children walking through a sports museum. I boarded two ways to get there. B opens on play, with a child asleep on a football, a bike lesson and a laughing close-up with the ball. A opens on memory, with the children in polaroid photographs and then the father as a young player. Both versions arrive at the same corridor of exhibits and the same final family frame.

The frames are full-bleed 16:9 pencil drawings with no template, so each one has to stand on its own as a picture. Most of the work is in the faces. Three ages look out from behind one open book. A sleeping child's weight rests on a ball.

The two versions sit side by side, beat for beat, with the two shared end frames once at the bottom. The cast was a real family chosen by the client, and they are not named here.
