About

Subin Yu 유수빈

Subin Yu (유수빈) is a character designer and story development artist based in South Korea, working in preschool and 2D animation. Her freelance storyboard credits include Pororo musical numbers produced through TOAST STUDIO, 똘똘이 nursery-song videos, and 총몇명 YouTube animation. She works in Korean and English and takes freelance commissions at [email protected].

I studied animation at university and made my first team films there, doing story, previs, character design, modelling and animating in turn. That is where I learned how a production fits together. My graduation film put an unlikely protagonist at the centre. My final-year paper argued that children's animation should move away from stereotyped good and evil character designs, and I still design with that in mind.

After university I joined a children's animation studio as an assistant director. I then taught animation fundamentals and portfolio preparation for several years, and some of those students went on to animation programmes. Since then I have worked freelance, drawing storyboards and designing characters for Korean studios and channels.

The part of production I want to be in is the front, where the character is found and the scene is staged. The storyboard work on this site shows that I can also deliver inside someone else's pipeline, to a script and on a template.
